Next New

I think the next type of new media will be centered around eyeglasses. I think Virtual and Augmented Reality will be developed to the point that there are able to be implemented in "Smart" eyeglasses. These glasses will be able to project an augmented reality onto what you see to project things like maps and Search. Media platforms like Facebook and Snapchat will be built into it so when you turn on Facebook through your glasses, your friends are able to see what you see. I am not sure how popular it would be but I feel like that would catch on in the beginning in a world where people are trying to share more and more of their lives on social media. It can serve as a way to capture images and videos without having your phone out trying to capture everything on the fly.

Wiki so far

My idea for the wiki is to add something related to banking and mobile payments. I have stumbled across the amazing technology called Level Up, that is quickly being implemented in fast casual restaurants throughout the city. I have been reading up on it as well as speaking to the customers who use it and the restaurant managers who implement it at their stores, just to get more insight into the technology. I think the QR code technology is fascinating and I can't wait to expand further on it for the wiki!

P2P

File sharing, in general, is the distribution or access to digital media such as books, movies, and music. There are several ways this can be done. One notable way is P2P, or Peer-to-peet, file sharing. P2P file sharing is that same distribution of digital media but using a P2P network in which computers are connected on the network without a central admin. The way it works without a central admin system is by having each "peer" allocate a certain amount of processing power or bandwidth to other participants. One example of P2P file sharing is highlighted by Clive Thompson in his article "The BitTorrent Effect". BitTorrent was a P2P file sharing program that allowed users to quickly upload and download large amounts of data. The way it came about was when the founder demonstrated it at a hacker conference as a way to swap software online, but quickly turned into an illegal way to download content. Other examples of P2P file sharing programs are Napster and Spotify.

Privacy

The information that is available on the Internet is very alarming. Due to technological advances and new media, information like your social security number, your address, and your credit card number is on our devices and on the Internet. Whether you are signing up for a credit check or trying to apply for a job online, you are providing sensitive information online with the hope that it is protected somehow. Another concern regarding privacy there is about new media is the issue around true privacy. Despite putting your social media accounts on private settings, there is still certain basic information that is made available to other people you may not be connected to. Also, that information is not removed or deleted from the Internet after you delete your account so the issue of privacy is also around that information being accessible somehow despite you deleting it.

Advice

If I was hired by Baruch to use new media to improve the College, I think the first thing I would propose is a campaign to get students to follow Baruch on social media. I would try to set up a campaign where if a student follows Baruch on social media, they would get a gift card or something. People would say it doesn't work because then those people can unfollow after but I plan to set up secret raffles that would entice students to keep following the accounts. I plan on using the social media page  to keep the students updated with important news to know about the school. I also want to use new media to incorporate it into more classes and curriculums. I would encourage professors to use blogs instead of assigning written responses individually. To improve the school, I would also try to incorporate new media into the Starr career center. I think there are many ways new technology that has developed could assist with interviewing and job applications, etc.

Creativity and New Media

Image
One of the biggest ways I display creativity using new media is through Instagram. Instagram is a great platform that allows users to share photos and videos with their family and friends. I like using it to share important moments or people in my life in a fun way. I show my creativity through the different venues I take a picture at, the different people I feature in my pictures, and even using the different filters that Instagram provides. Below is a picture of my Instagram page, with a small preview to some recent photos I have posted.
