Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds
There are many different ways virtual reality is being used today. One of its biggest applications is in gaming. More and more games are trying to incorporate real life imagery to enhance player interaction. There are multiple companies that are coming out with VR headsets that would immerse the player in a virtual reality world.
Another space that virtual reality is helping businesses. There is a company that is helping businesses have virtual meetings. In Going to the virtual office in Second Life, Mark Tutton says, "The company's Enterprise tool will let employees' avatars -- animated alter egos -- meet in virtual worlds from the privacy of a company's own network, rather than the public networks used in standard Second Life". It is transforming the way employees interact with each other, especially those that work in different continents without the ability to meet easily.
One of the pros is that it does allow for businesses to interact and hold meetings together by adding more intimacy to it. Another pro to virtual reality is that the games are becoming more vivid and therefore, more entertaining. However, virtual reality can go too far in some instances. In Virtual world may impact real-world behaviour, the author states that a study done showed that some minutes of role-play in a VR game could easily cause people to act a certain way. I think it is definitely a negative if it is influencing how people act.
I think the future of virtual reality could possibly expand to wearing eyeglasses that would show our entire world how we see it in virtual reality. This could be interesting because the eyeglasses could possibly give feedback on what you see through the glasses; that might be a possible direction that VR could head.
