There are many different ways virtual reality is being used today. One of its biggest applications is in gaming. More and more games are trying to incorporate real life imagery to enhance player interaction. There are multiple companies that are coming out with VR headsets that would immerse the player in a virtual reality world. Another space that virtual reality is helping businesses. There is a company that is helping businesses have virtual meetings. In Going to the virtual office in Second Life , Mark Tutton says, "The company's Enterprise tool will let employees' avatars -- animated alter egos -- meet in virtual worlds from the privacy of a company's own network, rather than the public networks used in standard Second Life". Twitter is very unique when it comes to its layout, which differentiates it from discussions through other modes of communication. Twitter makes it convenient to have discussions because you can tag a person to direct a post to them specifically. The site also allows you to create hashtags to compile different posts of a greater discussion. By searching the hashtag, you can find the discussions about that topic easily. With the limited character count, it forces people to respond in a concise way, making for a smoother discussion. However, that could also serve to diminish someone's message by not allowing them to articulate their point fully. As for discussions on Blackboard, they are not as smooth as discussions on Twitter. It forces people to make individual posts instead of being able to respond directly to someone, unless you are posting a comment. Now that I have created a Twitter account, I had a chance to compare Twitter with the other social networking sites out there. After experiencing Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, I personally like Facebook the most out of the four. It seems that Facebook has more ways of using the site compared to the other three. I find it great that you can use Facebook to stay in touch with friends through Messenger, update people with status updates, posts links that interest you, and posts personal pictures. I think it includes many of the benefits of Twitter and Instagram while those two sites are more niche themselves.  The fact that LinkedIn is more professional is something that I like about that site. Being an aspiring professional in college, I like that there is a site for me to stay in touch with professionals as well as professionally display myself to colleagues and prospective employers. With the rise of new media and new technology, we have seen it drastically change our lives. Whether it is in our jobs (corporate) or otherwise, new media has affected the society we live in. For corporations, new media has caused them to shift their recruiting tactics. In Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting , Frank Langfitt writes, "Using LinkedIn, Steckerl says he can scout a group of job candidates in just half an hour". Langfitt and Steckerl are praising LinkedIn and other forms of new media for giving companies the ability to search for job candidates easier. Technology like LinkedIn and Facebook allow for companies to search for those who fit the experience they are looking for as well as search their social media history for anything concerning. Both blogs and wikis are forms of new media that are changing the way we communicate and collaborate. Although they are similar in the way that they are changing the media space, they are different in their own respect. Blogs are considered more personal because there is limited collaboration involved. The collaboration comes with the ability to comment on posts but not to edit it. Blogs are the alternative to publishing, as it allows the blogger to post their thoughts and opinions on the web for others to view. One great feature about blogs is that they are in reverse chronological order, so it allows readers to view the blogger's newest content first. Blogs are very convenient for those who regularly want to share their thoughts with the online world. My research topic for the term paper is about how new media has impacted and is currently impacting basketball,  specifically the NBA.  I plan to look into the different new media outlets and see how it is being used to promote the game of basketball. I am also interested in seeing how the NBA is using new media to promote their brand and how "unknown" players are using these outlets to gain a following. There are many media companies that use these new media outlets to further the game of basketball. I hope to be in contact with someone working in the space at a company like ESPN or BleacherReport so I can get some insight on their role and how new media has affected their coverage of basketball.
